How to Double Cleanse Properly: A Pharmacist Explains When You Need It and When You Don't
Double cleansing has become one of the most talked-about skincare trends, but is it really necessary for everyone?
As a pharmacist, I often see people overcomplicating their skincare routines.
The truth is that double cleansing can be very effective but only when it's used correctly.
What Is Double Cleansing?
Double cleansing means washing your face in two steps:
1. Use an oil based cleanser or cleansing balm to dissolve makeup, sunscreen, excess oil and other oil soluble impurities.
2. Follow with a gentle water based cleanser to remove sweat, dirt, and any remaining residue.
This method helps leave your skin clean without harsh scrubbing.
Who Should Double Cleanse?
Double cleansing may be beneficial if you:
- Wear makeup regularly.
- Apply sunscreen every day.
- Have oily or combination skin.
- Live in an area with high pollution.
Who May Not Need It?
You may not need to double cleanse if you:
- Don't wear makeup or sunscreen.
- Have very dry or sensitive skin.
- Cleanse your face only once in the evening with a gentle cleanser and your skin feels clean afterward.
For some people, cleansing once is enough.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using harsh cleansers for both steps.
- Scrubbing your skin aggressively.
- Washing with very hot water.
- Cleansing too many times a day.
- Skipping moisturizer after cleansing.
How to Double Cleanse Correctly
1. Apply an oil cleanser or cleansing balm to dry skin.
2. Massage gently for about one minute.
3. Add a little water to emulsify the cleanser if instructed.
4. Rinse thoroughly.
5. Wash again with a gentle water based cleanser.
6. Pat your skin dry with a clean towel.
7. Apply moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp.
A Pharmacist's Tip
Double cleansing is a tool, not a requirement for everyone.
The best skincare routine is one that suits your skin type and addresses your specific concerns.
If your skin becomes tight, dry, or irritated after cleansing, your routine may be too harsh.
Healthy skin isn't about using the most products, it's about using the right products consistently.
